Frequently Asked Questions

What is a psychometric assessment?

A psychometric assessment is a standardized evaluation of your cognitive abilities, personality traits, career interests, or emotional functioning. These assessments use scientifically validated tests and questionnaires to measure various aspects of your psychological functioning. The results provide valuable insights to support educational placement, career planning, personal development, and decision-making.

How long does an assessment take?

The duration varies depending on the type of assessment and your individual needs. Most assessments require 2-4 sessions, each lasting 1-2 hours. School readiness assessments typically take 2-3 sessions, while comprehensive scholastic or career assessments may require 3-4 sessions. During our initial consultation, I will provide a clear timeline for your specific assessment process.

How should I prepare for an assessment?

The best preparation is to get a good night's sleep and arrive well-rested. There's no need to study or prepare specifically for the assessment—these tests measure your natural abilities and traits. For children, ensure they have eaten before the session and bring any snacks they might need. Bring relevant documents (school reports, previous assessments) to our first session. Most importantly, approach the assessment with a positive, open mindset.

What happens during the assessment process?

The process begins with an initial consultation to understand your needs and explain the assessment. During testing sessions, you'll complete various standardized tests, questionnaires, and activities depending on the assessment type. These may include puzzles, questions, drawing tasks, or problem-solving exercises. After testing, I score and interpret the results, then provide you with a comprehensive written report and schedule a feedback session to discuss the findings and recommendations in detail.

Will I receive the results, and how are they used?

Yes, you will receive a comprehensive written report explaining all assessment results in clear, understandable language. During our feedback session, I'll walk you through the findings, answer your questions, and discuss recommendations. You own this report and can share it with schools, universities, employers, or other professionals as needed. The results help inform educational placement, career decisions, personal development planning, or appropriate referrals if additional support is indicated.

Are assessment results confidential?

Absolutely. All assessment results and personal information are strictly confidential in accordance with HPCSA ethical guidelines and POPIA (Protection of Personal Information Act). Your results cannot be shared with any third party (schools, employers, healthcare providers) without your explicit written consent. You control who receives your assessment report and information.

What's the difference between a psychometrist and a psychologist?

Both are registered with the HPCSA, but we have different roles. As a psychometrist, I specialize in administering and interpreting psychological assessments. Psychologists provide therapy, counseling, and treatment in addition to assessments. I provide comprehensive assessment services and recommendations, but if you need therapeutic intervention, I will refer you to an appropriate registered psychologist or mental health professional.

Can assessments be done online?

Some components of the assessment process, such as interviews and specific questionnaires, can be conducted online. However, many psychometric assessments require in-person administration to ensure standardized conditions and accurate results. I conduct assessments from my Cape Town practice, where I can ensure proper testing conditions and provide the most reliable results. Contact me to discuss your specific situation and requirements.

How much does an assessment cost?

Assessment fees vary depending on the type of assessment, number of testing sessions required, and complexity of the evaluation. During our initial consultation, I will provide a detailed quote based on your specific needs. The fee typically covers all testing sessions, scoring, interpretation, comprehensive report, and feedback session. Contact me to discuss your assessment requirements and receive a personalized quote.

Do you provide therapy or counseling?

No, as a registered psychometrist, I provide assessment and evaluation services only. I do not provide therapy, counseling, or psychological treatment. My role is to conduct thorough assessments that provide insights and recommendations. If your assessment results indicate that therapeutic intervention would be beneficial, I will provide appropriate referrals to registered psychologists or other qualified mental health professionals who can provide the support you need.
